Free Exam Timer Online for SAT, GRE, IELTS & Custom Sections
This free exam timer online sets up multi-section mock tests in seconds. Open Settings, pick an SAT, GRE, IELTS or Custom preset, adjust section names and minutes, then run a fullscreen section-by-section countdown with exam timer controls. Short chimes mark each transition; a final chime marks when every section is complete.
Why use exam timer for mock tests
A generic classroom countdown is hard to read from the back row and easy to lose during a long mock test. Exam timer is built for invigilation: large digits, a centered section label, total remaining time in the header, and simple Start / Pause / Cancel controls.
Switch to fullscreen on a projector or interactive board and the page chrome disappears. Use the toolbar wake-lock toggle on supported browsers to keep the display awake. Exam timer runs without an account or install, so shared lab machines are fine.
- Section-aware exam timer with the active block name centered above the countdown.
- Total remaining time and per-section duration stay visible, even while paused.
- Yellow digits in the last five minutes and red in the last minute for long sections.
- Short chime at every section change and a longer chime when the full sequence ends.
SAT, GRE and IELTS exam timer presets
Four presets cover common standardized formats and remain fully editable. The SAT exam timer preset starts with Critical Reading 65, Writing 35 and Math 80. The GRE exam timer preset loads Verbal 30, Quant 35, Verbal 30, Quant 35 (2h 10m total). The IELTS exam timer preset pre-fills Reading 60 and Writing 60. Custom gives three 25-minute blocks for study sprints or practice drills.
Presets only save typing. After you select one in Settings, rename any section or change minutes in Exam Sections list. Your layout is stored locally in the browser, so a refresh during prep does not erase saved section settings.
- SAT exam timer: Critical Reading 65, Writing 35, Math 80 (3 sections).
- GRE exam timer: Verbal 30, Quant 35, Verbal 30, Quant 35 (4 sections, 2:10).
- IELTS exam timer: Reading 60, Writing 60 (2 sections).
- Custom exam timer: three 25-minute sections you can rename freely.
Build sections in Settings before you start
Open Settings from the toolbar to reach Quick presets and Exam Sections editor. Add up to ten sections, rename them, and set minutes for each block before you press Start. Remove a row with × and watch the Total update instantly.
Once a countdown session is running, section inputs lock so nobody can change the schedule mid-session. Press Cancel or Reset Timer to return to setup and edit the layout again.
- Up to 10 sections per exam timer session.
- Inline name and minute editing with a live Total readout.
- Inputs lock while the countdown runs; unlock after reset.
How to run exam timer on a projector
Open /timer/exam-timer, choose a preset in Settings, review sections, then press Start. The clock moves to the top-left corner, the section name sits in the center of the running card, total remaining time appears on the left, and a short chime plays on every section change.
Pause for announcements or interruptions; Resume continues from the same timestamp. Cancel stops the session and returns to setup while keeping your saved section layout in the browser.
- Preset → edit sections → Start launches exam timer.
- Pause and Resume without losing progress.
- Cancel returns to setup; local layout persists.
Exam timer vs single classroom countdown
Choose exam timer when you need named sections, automatic transitions, and a visible total remaining time across multiple blocks—mock SAT, GRE or IELTS runs, certification drills, or any multi-part quiz.
Use the Classroom Timer on the home page when you only need one continuous countdown. Exam timer stays minimal: no streaks, no achievements—just a readable display, section labels, and optional chimes for proctors and trainers.
